Council Sustainability Grant

Community Foods have been awarded $5,000 from Cairns Regional Council to build community awareness and strengthen the market for local food products.  The mission of the grant is to increase community resilience to climate change and peak oil.

Through the grant Community Foods will be working with other like-minded organisations (such as the Real Food Network and the Tablelands Organic and Bio-dynamic Farmers Co-op, Atherton) to build an even stronger linkage between local farmers and local consumers.  We will undertake research, promotions and discussions with the aim of increasing the awareness of how valuable buying local is. Beth, Community Foods' former coordinator, will be the Local Foods Promotion Officer - it's great to have her back on deck!

We recognise that supporting local farmers reduces the fuel needed to transport your food around the world, provides for vibrant communities and is good for you because you eat with in tune with the seasons.  Community Foods is looking forward to promoting this concept over the next 12 months and will keep you posted along the way.
