Christmas Chews

A recipe from a friend of a friend of a friend.  It is so good, that's why it has been passed on to so many people!  This is a deliciously soft and sweet slice.


  • 1 cup of dates, chopped
  • 1 cup of walnuts, chopped
  • 1 cup (or less) of raw or rapadura sugar
  • 1 cup of plain or wholemeal self-raising flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 desert spoon of melted butter
  • Icing sugar (to dust)

Note: All ingredients in bold are generally available at the Community Foods shop


  1. Mix all dry ingedients together
  2. Add melted butter and lightly beaten eggs
  3. Press into slice tin (it is a bit sticky and fiddly to press in)
  4. Bake in moderate oven until golden on top (approx 20 mins, to make it nice and chewy don't over do it)
  5. Dust with icing sugar
  6. Allow to cool a little, then remove from tin and cut (it's easier to cut when still a little warm)
